Heartbreak for Mozambique
Houssine Kharja of Morocco celebrates goal
Mozambique took a two goal lead into the match after they beat Morocco 2-0 in the first leg, but an outstanding display from the home side on Saturday night saw them score four superb goals to overturn the tie and see themselves into the Afcon tournament in South Africa next year.
Goals from Abdelaziz Barrada, Houssine Kharja, Youssef Al Arabi and Nordin Amrabat saw Morocco capture the surprise 4-0 victory.
The first half was a tense affair as neither side really wanted to budge, but a goal from Barrada in the closing moments of the first half gave the home side the ascendancy going into the break.
The second 45 saw Morocco take the game away from Mozambique.
And 15 minutes into the second stanza things went to from bad to worse for the visitors after Miro gave away a penalty and was also shown red for his foul in the box.
Kharja stepped up for Morocco and made no mistake from the spot-kick to draw the tie level on aggregate.
The comeback was complete for the home side five minutes before time when Al Arabi produced a clinical header to give his side the lead, 3-2.
The result was put beyond doubt in the dying seconds of the match when Amrabat scored his side’s fourth goal and sealed his side’s ticket to the 2013 Afcon.
