DR Congo breeze past Seychelles

DR Congo have advanced to the final stage of qualifying for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 victory over Seychelles on Sunday.

The win gives the Congolese a 7-0 aggregate victory and continues their impressive recent form.

Leading 4-0 from the first leg in February, Dieumerci Mbokani gave DR Congo the lead on Sunday, before further goals from Issama Mpeka and Deo Kanda made the game safe.

Congolese football has enjoyed high status on the African continent in recent years after the exploits of their club TP Mazembe in winning the 2009 and 2010 CAF Champions League, as well as reaching the final of the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup.

But the national team has been unable to match that success, with their last showing at the Africa Cup of Nations being in 2006 when they reached the quarterfinals in Egypt.

They are now just two games away from a place in South Africa 2013 though, having also reached the quarterfinals when the tournament was last played in that country in 1996.
