Morocco face Mambas challenge

Morocco’s reputation as a team of huge potential and a future continental champion has been on the wane this year and faces another examination against Mozambique away on Sunday.

The two countries clash in their African Nations Cup final round, first leg qualifier at the Machava Stadium as the Mambas move back to their spiritual home despite last year’s opening of the impressive Zimpeto Stadium.

Mozambique look to be largely outgunned by an impressive looking Morocco squad, who have recalled Adel Taarabt and Marouane Chamakh, but since lost Chamakh to injury.

Morocco were one of the favourites at the Nations Cup finals in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon earlier this year but bombed out in spectacular fashion and have looked to be in a crisis of confidence since.

Coach Eric Gerets is under pressure from Morocco’s media, who have turned on him after a honeymoon period and now spend as much time examining his tax affairs and salary as they do his selections.

Mozambique have just four foreign-based players in their squad, notably Mexer from Nacional in Portugal and Dominquez from Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. Midfielder Simao, based in China, has been dropped for disciplinary reasons.
