Gervinho: We are capable of anything
Ivoirian striker Gervinho
The Elephants were drawn opposite none other than Senegal, the heavyweight of group two and for some time now known as the team to avoid in finals.
But Arsenal’s Ivoirian striker, Gervinho, seems little perturbed as he expresses his confidence in the strength of the Elephants.
“Côte d’Ivoire should not fear any opponent. Senegal is a big team with big players whom we respect, but they do not scare us. Our ambition is to qualify for the Afcon CAN 2013, no matter which opponent we face,” reacted the Gunner after the draw.
The Teranga Lions, led by Joseph Koto whose position as coach was confirmed on Thursday, will have the minor advantage of hosting Didier Drogba and co. in the return match. But Gervinho is certain that Côte d’Ivoire have their destiny in their own hands.
“Ideally we would make our away game in Dakar easier if we have a big victory in the first leg. Either way, we are capable of anything. We will be playing to win both legs,” explained Gervinho.
Over thirteen encounters, the Elephants have beaten Senegal seven times, with only four defeats.
The first leg will take place at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, this coming 7, 8 or 9 September.
